Nuclear Medicine Technologist Training in NJ

Hybrid / Distance Education Program

The Associate of Applied Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology (NMT) program is designed to prepare students to become entry-level nuclear medicine technologists. Nuclear medicine technologists use radiopharmaceuticals and specialized imaging equipment to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. They also play an important role in patient care, radiation safety, and the safe handling of radioactive materials.

Students in the Nuclear Medicine Technology program at AIMS Education will study the scientific and technical principles used in nuclear medicine, including radiation biology and physics, radiopharmaceuticals, imaging instrumentation, radiation safety, and quality assurance. The curriculum combines didactic instruction with laboratory training and clinical education to help students apply these concepts in healthcare settings.

The program also provides training in nuclear medicine imaging procedures and hybrid imaging technologies such as PET/CT and SPECT/CT. Students will learn about camera setup, image acquisition and processing, patient preparation, and the clinical applications of nuclear medicine for diagnosing and treating disease.

Throughout the program, students will develop the patient care and communication skills needed to explain procedures, address patient concerns, and promote patient safety and comfort. The curriculum also emphasizes professionalism, ethical practice, and compliance with regulations governing the use and handling of radioactive materials.

Hybrid Learning

The Nuclear Medicine Technology associate degree program is taught using a hybrid learning environment. Online and in-person instruction is utilized throughout the program. Lectures may be offered on campus or remotely via a Learning Management System (LMS). Most laboratory classes and practical training will be held in an on-campus lab or at a clinical site.

Online classes will be taught synchronously. Synchronous instruction is real-time instruction that requires students to attend classes at scheduled times.

Nuclear Medicine Technology Clinical Internship

Nuclear Medicine Technology students are required to complete 1250 clinical hours. Students will be placed at a clinical site by the AIMS Clinical Internship Department. The clinical internship courses are designed to provide practical training in a healthcare environment, where students will receive supervision and guidance from qualified clinical personnel.

AIMS Education has clinical affiliations with hospitals and imaging centers throughout New Jersey. Students will be placed at one or more affiliated clinical sites and must complete their clinical hours according to the schedule provided by the school. Internship schedules are based on the availability of clinical sites. All students must be prepared to complete their internship during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. The majority of clinical sites do not allow students to complete clinical hours in the evening or on weekends.

Employment for Nuclear Medicine Technologists

Most nuclear medicine technologists work in hospitals. Other employment settings include physicians' offices, medical and diagnostic laboratories, and imaging centers. In these settings, nuclear medicine technologists may prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals, operate nuclear medicine imaging equipment, and assist with diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures. Some healthcare facilities also perform hybrid imaging procedures such as PET/CT and SPECT/CT, which may require additional certification and licensure depending on the technologist's responsibilities.


Accreditation and Certification Exam Disclosure

The Nuclear Medicine Technology program has initiated the application process for programmatic accreditation by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT). A site visit is anticipated within the first year of program implementation. Accreditation is not guaranteed.

Under current eligibility requirements established by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), only graduates of programmatically accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology programs are eligible to take the NMTCB Nuclear Medicine Certification Examination. Accordingly, eligibility for the NMTCB certification examination is dependent upon the AIMS Nuclear Medicine Technology program obtaining JRCNMT accreditation.

Classroom and Clinical Training Schedule

Students who enroll in a semester-based program must have flexible schedules and be able to attend classes and/or clinical training sessions during morning, day, and evening hours. Certain courses will only be taught in the evening regardless of the program’s standard schedule.

Nuclear Medicine Technology Program Length

The Nuclear Medicine Technology associate degree can be completed in 6 semesters, or approximately 24 months. Students will enroll as a cohort and progress through the program at the same pace. Each cohort will complete three semesters per academic year.

Minimum Admission Requirements

To be eligible to apply for this program, applicants must also have at least one of the following:

  • At least 30 college credits
  • At least 1 year of healthcare experience related to direct patient care
  • Graduate of the credit-bearing Patient Care Technician program at AIMS Education
  • Graduate of the credit-bearing Medical Assistant program at AIMS Education

Prerequisites for Enrollment

The Nuclear Medicine Technology program requires completion of prerequisite coursework before the first semester begins. These prerequisites may be fulfilled through eligible college-level coursework.

  • College-level Algebra or higher
  • College-level General Chemistry with Lab*

*For the January 4, 2027 cohort only, students may begin the program before completing the Chemistry prerequisite. Proof of successful completion must be submitted before the start of the second semester. Students who do not provide proof of completion by that deadline will be dismissed from the program.

Applicants are encouraged to complete the prerequisite courses before submitting an application, but it is not required. For applicants who need additional scheduling flexibility, Portage Learning offers self-paced Algebra and Chemistry courses that satisfy these requirements.

Selective Enrollment

The Nuclear Medicine Technology program has a selective, multi-stage admissions process. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. From the pool of applicants, those considered most qualified for the study and practice of Nuclear Medicine Technology will be admitted.

Application Screening and Deadline

After submitting the initial admissions application, applicants for the Nuclear Medicine Technology program will undergo a preliminary screening to determine whether they will be invited to the next stage of the admissions process. Applicants who pass the screening will be invited to take the entrance exam.

All other admissions decisions will be made after the application deadline. If the program reaches capacity before the deadline, applications may close early.

Professional Licensure Disclosure

To practice as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist in New Jersey, individuals must be licensed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). AIMS Education has determined that the curriculum for the Associate of Applied Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology is designed to satisfy the educational requirements for New Jersey licensure, contingent upon continued NJDEP program approval and successful completion of applicable programmatic accreditation requirements.

The Nuclear Medicine Technology program has received provisional approval from NJDEP. Continued approval is subject to NJDEP requirements, including programmatic accreditation by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT). Students are responsible for meeting all additional licensure requirements established by NJDEP, including any examination, application, background, fee, or other requirements in effect at the time of application for licensure.

*The Nuclear Medicine Technology program is currently available only to students located in New Jersey at the time of enrollment.
