Exploring Ultrasound’s Role in Neonatal Care Through Lecture and Simulation

AIMS Education welcomed Dr. Nimisha Mehta for an engaging guest lecture focused on the vital role of ultrasound in neonatal medicine. During the session, Dr. Mehta guided students through the fundamentals of imaging the neonatal brain, spine, and hips, emphasizing how ultrasound supports the evaluation and diagnosis of common conditions in newborns.

Throughout the lecture, Dr. Mehta reviewed essential scanning techniques and demonstrated how proper image acquisition and interpretation contribute to accurate clinical assessments. By connecting imaging findings with real-life clinical scenarios, she helped students understand how ultrasound is used in neonatal care and how sonographers play a critical role in early diagnosis and patient management.

To reinforce these concepts, students participated in a hands-on training session in the simulation lab. Under Dr. Mehta’s guidance, they practiced performing neonatal hip and cranial scans using simulation models. The exercise allowed students to identify important anatomical landmarks while refining probe placement and positioning techniques needed to produce clear diagnostic images.

Dr. Mehta also introduced students to the principles of ultrasound-guided procedures. Through demonstrations using procedural phantoms, students observed techniques such as thoracentesis and breast biopsy while learning the importance of real-time imaging, proper needle visualization, and safe procedural practices.

The practical component of the session provided students with valuable exposure to both diagnostic imaging and interventional ultrasound techniques. By combining lecture-based instruction with hands-on simulation, the experience strengthened students’ technical skills and deepened their understanding of how ultrasound technology supports patient care across different clinical settings.

Guest lectures like this reflect AIMS Education’s commitment to providing immersive, career-focused learning opportunities. By learning directly from experienced professionals such as Dr. Mehta, students gain practical insight into the evolving applications of ultrasound and develop the confidence and skills needed to succeed in the field of diagnostic medical sonography.
