AIMS DMS Students Gain Exclusive Access to Advanced Imaging Technology During JSUMC Field Experience

Exploring Innovation Beyond the Classroom
Learning extends far beyond the classroom at AIMS Education College of Health Sciences. Recently, 17 students from the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program traveled to Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) for an immersive educational experience that showcased the latest advancements in diagnostic imaging and outpatient radiology.
Accompanied by Program Director Sheetal Chhabra and Clinical Coordinator Ginelle Gutierrez, students spent the day exploring the hospital's outpatient radiology department, where they connected classroom concepts with real-world clinical applications.
The visit was hosted by Patrique Larco Brown, EdD, MPH, RDMS (BR), RVT, Outpatient Radiology Supervisor, and Christine Sutter, BS, RDMS, RVT, Ultrasound Coordinator. Throughout the tour, students were introduced to the collaborative environment of modern medical imaging and learned how multiple specialties work together to support patient diagnosis and care.
In addition to observing ultrasound, students received informative overviews of X-ray, Bone Density, CT, and MRI services, giving them a broader perspective on the diverse technologies used throughout radiology departments.
One of the most memorable moments of the visit came during a live ultrasound demonstration led by Patrique Larco Brown. Students stepped into both the technologist and patient roles, volunteering to be scanned while their classmates practiced ultrasound techniques under professional supervision. The interactive session provided a valuable opportunity to build confidence, refine scanning skills, and receive guidance from experienced sonographers in a clinical setting.

The field trip also introduced students to imaging technologies that are rarely seen in traditional educational settings. They explored the Weight-Bearing CT (Standing CT), an advanced system that captures diagnostic images while patients remain upright, as well as the Zap-X Advanced Radiation Therapy System, a highly specialized platform designed for non-invasive brain tumor treatment. Seeing these innovative technologies firsthand gave students insight into the future of medical imaging and the rapid evolution of patient care.
Experiences like this reinforce AIMS Education's commitment to preparing students for successful healthcare careers through meaningful clinical exposure and industry partnerships. By engaging with experienced professionals and exploring state-of-the-art technology, students returned with a deeper appreciation for the expanding opportunities within diagnostic medical sonography and medical imaging.
