December 21, 2019

No matter if you’re new to the industry or you’re a allied healthcare veteran, becoming an EKG tech (also known as a cardiac monitor tech, ECG tech, and telemetry technician) provides a rewarding future with excellent employment opportunities. So how, exactly, do you get your EKG technician education?

We’re glad you asked: We’ve compiled a thorough step-by-step guide to get you started on the right foot!

1. Choose Your EKG Technician Education & Training Program

It’s vital to determine which program best fits your needs. Many students work while they go to school, so will you be studying full-time or part-time? Do you require something close to home with an easy commute? Are you planning on moving to another city or state to study?

If you live near a few schools that offer EKG tech training programs, go out and visit some to determine whether you enjoy the environment and atmosphere.

Speak with an Admissions Expert

Before scheduling a visit, make an appointment with a school representative who can help you fulfill your EKG technician education requirements.

This rep will walk you through the application and enrollment process, especially when it comes payment options. Be prepared to talk about your previous academic performance and any goals that you hope to achieve by becoming an EKG tech.

2. Determine Your Payment Options

If your EKG tech program (which may also be referred to as a cardiac monitor technician training program) that doesn’t offer federal financial aid, a variety of other options might be available. You may be entitled to scholarships or private loans, or even an interest-free payment plans.

3. Apply to the Right EKG Technician Certification Program

Once you know how you’ll be paying for your education, it’s time to complete and turn in your application. Many EKG tech schools have rolling admission schedules which means that applicants can enroll shortly once course dates are posted on the school’s website.

Some programs allow students to enroll over the internet, but most require an in-person application. It’s not unheard of for students to be accepted on the day of their application, so be prepared to sign admission documents (like your enrollment agreement). Don’t worry if you aren’t given an immediate decision: Most schools make their decision within a couple weeks.

While applying at your chosen school, you may be interviewed by a school administrator and/or asked to pass an entrance exam (e.g. Accuplacer or Wonderlic SLE).

4. Attend Your School’s EKG Tech Orientation

Once you’ve enrolled in your EKG technician training program, orientation is the perfect time to learn about your school’s procedures and policies. You’ll also be able to ask staff members and teachers any lingering questions that you may still have.

5. Finish Your EKG Technician Certification Program

In addition to observing EKG/ECG machines and understanding their readouts, you will learn to perform 12-Lead and 15-Lead EKGs. You’ll also study patient care, anatomy, and physiology.

After completing the classroom requirements, most accredited programs may include a clinical internship. This internship will provide practical experience in a real work environment. With the guidance of an experienced mentor, you’ll develop the skills you need to be an excellent and competitive EKG technician.

6. Pass Your EKG Technician Certification Exam(s)

Once your classroom and internship requirements are satisfied, you’ll be ready to take the national certification exam. The Certified EKG Technician exam is offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and the Certified Cardiographic Technician and Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician exams are offered by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
